Chapter Nine

Rémy wasn’t certain who enjoyed his slow, thorough drying of Annelise with his fluffy towels more, her or him. Probably him, but only because it allowed him to see every gorgeous, naked inch of her wet body again and to touch her everywhere. Still, while Annelise was still gloriously sensitive and responsive, he couldn’t ignore the sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. The growing dread and distaste for what he was about do was even more of an insult now that they’d had incredible sex with such magnificent abandon. In a different time, he thought, he really could have grown to love her, might already be growing to, now. He pushed the thought away determinedly and refocused himself on what he had to do.

He dried himself quickly and slid into the bed with her, settling himself so that she nestled right next to him with her head on his right shoulder, and he turned to curve his leg over hers, entwining them. With his free arm, he pulled the bedcovers up over them, and then settled in with a sigh of contentment, kissing the hair at her temple.

“Okay, now I can never look at a hot tub the same way again. Ever. The clawfoot tub in my new apartment that I was so proud of is going to look awfully small, too.” She gave a silvery laugh and he felt the vibrations against his chest.

It was the perfect opening. He took a deep breath. “And what is your life like in Boston, then, hm? What do you do when you’re not running large events or seducing hapless travelers with your luminous beauty, I wonder?”

She lifted her head to look at him, and her smile cut him to the core. He wished he could always have that look in his mind, to call up the memory. She was still flushed and sated from their lovemaking, pleased by his wanting to know more.

“Well, I’ve been spending a lot of time with my friends, visiting places I always wanted to but never seemed to be able to convince my ex-fiancé to go—a whale watch on Cape Cod, a cider-tasting in Vermont. I visited a couple of the historical house museums… I think you’d like those, Professor.”

“Oh, absolument. I’m certain I would. And your office is in a historic part of the city too, isn’t it?”

“You did your homework, huh? Or did your brother tell you? He’s been to a few meetings with Charles in Boston in the last few months. Yeah, we’re in the Copley area, just a couple blocks from Newbury Street, close to the Common and the Public Garden. It’s a great location.”

Rémy covered his surprise. Pierre hadn’t mentioned that he’d met with Charles Pinkston in Boston. Normally, when Rémy was working as a professor, that wouldn’t have been odd. But these past few months, he’d been almost as involved in the family business as he’d been right after their parents had died. Rémy had known his brother had been to Boston a couple of times, arranging things for their new U.
